WATCH: The TU Student News Desk Went Two Buttons Deep With Our Own Jack Carpenter

The Capital Region is lucky to have a successful print newspaper at our doorsteps each morning. The Albany Times Union is a local staple for credible news, up-to-the-minute updates and talented, likable journalists.

But aside from having all the essentials to be considered a thriving publication, one of the TU’s strongest assets is the New Visions: Multimedia and Digital Communications BOCES program.

The program selectively chooses high school seniors from all over the region to participate in a rigorous, yearlong immersion course teaching multimedia news skills, the history behind it all and what the future holds for this field.

From shadowing TU writers to producing a video series at the College of St. Rose, these kids are exposed to everything they could get thrown at them as up-and-coming professional journalists.

They were even exposed to Jack Carpenter, our fearless leader here at 2BD. Jack was cool enough to spend some time with this year’s class at their TU Student News Desk’s in-studio segment. Check out the blog post and the video and find out what he had to say to inspire our youth out there.

(Full disclosure: I am a 2011 graduate of the New Visions Program and a freelance writer for the Times Union.)
