We’re Hosting an Adult Spelling Bee With $500 and a Championship Belt on the Line

I remember it like it was yesterday.

“Whether. W-H-E-T-H-E-R, whether.”

“No Jack, that’s wrong, sorry.”

“What????” My mind, boggled.

That is how I was nixed from my 5th grade spelling bee at Chango Elementary. I spelt a word right, but I thought I was hot stuff and jumped right into it before asking for it to be used in a sentence.

The word was weather.

That memory has stuck with me and my bruised ego ever since. It can be a tragic moment to realize your spelling is not up to par with your peers. I always dreamt of going to the big leagues and representing my district at The Egg in Albany, but alas, I spelled “weather” wrong and have lived with it ever since.

I’m not alone, a few of my peers also vividly remember getting bounced from their bees. Little did I know we were all auto-piloting through life while burying the embarrassment that our lack of academic superiority in the elementary school has stowed upon us. We’re all just wishing, waiting for an opportunity to hop back on that mic and prove once and for all we can spell well.

Well folks, now is your chance.

Our friend at United Way of the Greater Capital Region decided are putting on this event and asked 2BD to MC the adult spelling bee on December 6 at the Troy Innovation Garage. It will be like all other spelling bees, but waaaaaay better, mainly because there will be beer and Dinosaur BBQ.

Our contestants will go through an escalating list of words until we dwindle down to one champion who will be presented with $500 and the to-be famous adult spelling bee championship belt. This is the spelling bee hopes and dreams are made of, and we hope you step up to the mic to participate.

Lucky for you, I will be hosting this madness, so I cannot compete and win. But only 20 contestants are allowed so sign up ASAP. It’s the first annual so this is your chance to claim your spot in the history books and above all, a chance to redeem yourself from your elementary years.

“I get knocked down, but I get up again
You are never gonna keep me down
I get knocked down, but I get up again
You are never gonna keep me down
I get knocked down, but I get up again
You are never gonna keep me down
I get knocked down, but I get up again
You are never gonna keep me down
I get knocked down, (we’ll be singing)
but I get up again
You are never gonna keep me down (when we’re winning)”

P.S. United Way has a killer podcast featuring all the movers and shakers in the area and it’s worth a listen. It won’t help you learn how to spell, though.
